KC Review… Red-Headed Step Child by Jaye Wells

In a world where being of mixed-blood is a major liability, Sabina Kane has the only profession fit for an outcast: assassin. But, her latest mission threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races and Sabina must scramble to figure out which side she’s on. She’s never brought her work home with her—until now.

This time, it’s personal

I started this book without knowing anything about this series and with hopes that I had found a new series that I would really enjoy and like to continue with…let me say I was NOT disappointed!

Sabina’s story begins with her comfortable in her life as an assassin for the vampire order called the Dominae. Not only is she their top assassin, she is also granddaughter to one of the 4 head members of the Dominae Council. You would think that means she is privy to top notch treatment within the organization but we soon learn that isn’t the case for our tough-as-nails Sabina. She is a half breed….a mix of vampire and mage. Half breeds aren’t exactly the norm in a world where the different species of the supernatural don’t get along. So even though Sabina comes from vamp royalty, her Grammy dearest always holds her half breed status over her head.

When Sabina is asked to assassinate a friend as her next assignment, she really starts to resent how she has been treated over the years and has a nagging underlying feeling that she needs to reexamine where her loyalties lie. However, loyal to her grandmother, Sabina completes this mission and returns home to her apartment to almost be assassinated herself by a demon who was summoned to kill her.

Now begins Sabina’s journey into finding out who she really is and where her loyalties should lie. The next assignment given by the Dominae is to infiltrate the enemy’s organization and murder their leader, Clovis, who is also a half breed and has made his mission to preach love and light between the species. So it’s funny that while living a lie in order to get into the enemy’s bed, Sabina would find out more truth about herself than she could have ever imagined.

Along the way, Sabina meets a cast of characters that help open her eyes and ask her to abandon everything she’s ever known. Giguhl , the demon who was originally sent to kill Sabina, becomes a friend and ally….well, after they both realized they are stuck with each other until the spell that sent him there can be reversed. He made me laugh out loud so many times throughout the book, I sure was glad he had to stay!

We meet Adam, a hottie mage who works for the Hekate Council, one of the Dominae’s sworn enemies. He is instrumental in saving Sabina’s ass and teaching her about herself….and about the family that she had been told shunned her since birth….which we find out is far from the truth. We also meet Vinca. Vinca is Sabina’s roommate in the compound Clovis has his followers live. Sabina is weary at first because Vinca is a nymph with a bubbly personality that couldn’t clash any more with Sabina’s rouch and tumble personality. Turns out the old saying is true, opposites really do attract.

Together, their motley crew starts on a mission that leads to truths and betrayal. Death and new beginnings. The turmoil has just begun for all of them and it seems like they were all meant to be together, even though they had no idea.

I really enjoyed this story. There was a lot of mythology intertwined with different ideas about how all of these races came to be. It was fresh and witty and I loved the characters different personalities and banter. Although there was no sex (BOOOO!) you can definitely feel the building between Sabina and Adam and I can’t wait to see where they are headed together! I can’t wait to start the next book in the series, The Mage in Black. Thank you, Ms. Wells, for a great read!
