Review…Rise of the Fallen by Donya Lynne

In the streets of Chicago exists an uneasy, centuries-old truce between vampires and their distant cousins, a race of shifters called drecks. Vampire enforcement agency, All the King’s Men (AKM), is charged with maintaining the truce, but when volatile enforcer Micah Black loses his mate and falls into the biological agony that results from the broken bond, he tests the boundaries of the truce by seeking out Apostle, a leader in the dreck community. Micah wants Apostle to kill him, a request Apostle is more than happy to fulfill.

When ex-Army medic Samantha Garrett inadvertently disrupts the plot and saves Micah’s life, a chain reaction sets Micah’s heart on a collision course with Sam’s, but he will have to protect her from Apostle and her obsessive ex-husband, Steve, if they will have a chance at forever. Can Micah hold his emotions together to keep Sam alive?

This is a story about an alpha male vampire and member of a type of underworld peacekeeping organization called All The King’s Men, Micah, and his climb back from the depths of his own personal hell.

The story begins with Micah in the ultimate despair of recently losing his mate. He has completely gone off the deep end and plunged head first into the dark abyss of his pain and is consumed by the crushing loss. He has gone off the grid with AKM and has all but disappeared. In his isolation he craves pain so much that he has begun to self mutilate in order to create some sort of balance between physical and emotional suffering. Until he finally reaches a breaking point and decides he no longer wants to live. He must end it.

This leads Micah into a dangerous deal with the enemy…he asks a member of the drecks, the otherworld beings the vampires are assigned police, to gather some friends and beat him…to death.

Lucky for Micah, fate is about to intervene in the form of a kick ass ex-army medic who just happens to be in the right place at the right time and can bring him back from the depths of his despair. Samantha, better known as Sam, sees a terrible beating going on while walking to her car after her shift, and just can’t sit back and ignore it. She takes the drecks by surprise and ends up saving Micah from his self –imposed death sentence and nurses him back to health, in more ways than one. She is the one who can heal his wounds both physical and emotional. But because she interrupted the beating and saved Micah’s life, she now has enemies she never even knew existed…the drecks.

Throughout the story we meet the other members of AKM and start to get an idea of the dynamics between them all. They are a rough and tumble bunch with stories that seem to rage from heartwarming to gut wrenching. Trace, an AKM member, takes a personal responsibility in keeping Micah alive and becomes a true friend in the end. He seems kind and loyal and is extremely powerful but I have a feeling he will need help from Micah in keeping his power in check later down the road. I am hoping we see more of him!

This was a great read. I enjoyed the two main characters and the introduction into the world of All the King’s Men. Micah and Sam make an uber hot couple and there were some hot and steamy scenes that had me panting for more! I am really looking forward to see how the series develops and relationships between the All the King’s Men progress. If you’re a Black Dagger Brotherhood fan this should be on your “to read” list!! Thank you Ms. Lynne, for a fantastic read!
